I’ve been curious about Kindle since I heard about it, few years back.
I love reading books. And I love the feeling of holding a book, doing some highlights, or even writing some little notes if needed. Sometimes I will bring along my notes to write the takeaway from the books I read.
So, these thought keep bugging me. Is it worth it? Is it really that good? Is it useful? Can’t I just use the tablet or smartphone or even laptop?
I really feel it’s too expensive just to buy the device that cost me starting more than IDR 1M (USD79.99) just for buying the very basic device. And that Kindle cost USD 79.99 is meant for Kids. On top of that, you still have to buy the books online from Amazon later on after you purchase the device.
Coming from a humble small town in Indonesia made some of the devices become so luxurious and a lot of them not available in store for me. However, since I moved to Singapore, I started to be exposed with all the sophisticated and luxurious things. I saw few peoples reading via Kindle. Very rare though. But yes, I can see someone using it.
And there was one time I got the blessing to go Australia. My friend, Peggy, was using Kindle to read her books. Finally I gotta to see it and try it a bit. This is my very first encounter touching the Kindle and got a glimpse of it. It feels good. Especially if you love to read. On a side note, I love her creativity to make her own cover for her Kindle. I am going to copy cat her. Haha. Don’t tell her please. This is between you and me. OK.
This year, 2016, again I got another blessing to travel to North America. And I was blessed to have visited Amazon Store in University Village early of this month. And the first stop was off course – where I got to see all the Kindle being displayed there. There were 4 different Kindle being displayed; which is Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Voyage, and Kindle Oasis.
I was tempted. I was contemplating. Should I get a Kindle for myself? Should I not? Will I read or not? If yes, which one should I choose? Kindle or Kindle Paperwhite. Kindle Voyage and Kindle Oasis were out of my budget for the moment. And, I was afraid that I won’t use it because It’s been a long long long time since I read my last book.
At the end, because I really want to give it a try, I took Kindle. Yeah, I know it was meant for Kids. But, as long as I can read the book, it should have fulfill the purpose 😀
After reading with Kindle, I do really love it!
Why then I would choose to read on my Kindle over tablet?
It is easy on your eyes. And NO SCREEN GLARE even in bright sunlight.
I can attest to this one. I got a high degree myopa, thus my eyes get tired easily. Especially if I have to look into the computer screen, phone screen, tablet screen or even television too long.
When I read using Kindle, it was just like reading on paper. Like a real paper. I cannot believe it myself. But it really is easy on your eyes.
I guess this Kindle version is really good for kids because it kinda friendly to their eyes, also it doesn’t have back lit thus they will have a habit to read with a light on – not to read in the dark.
It’s lighter and thinner.
I did bring a my 2 in 1 laptop last time. Some time if it is too heavy, I will just bring the screen as a tablet. Compare to Kindle, Kindle is very light that you can really use one hand to hold it. And the size is just nice. Not as big as tablet. It’s thin and can contain a lot of books in the same time. If I have to bring a book, it will consume some space in my bag. Not with my kindle.
No distraction while we are lost in the story.
The thing with the tablet – especially when connected to the Wi-Fi, you can get distracted with all the notifications or updates or maybe the games. It won’t happen with the Kindle. Basically it is meant for reading. So, once you are there, you can get lost in your story.
As an Indonesian, my vocabulary is Private Limited. 😀 There are some words that I didn’t understand or didn’t really know it at all. With Kindle dictionary, while reading, actually I am expanding my vocabulary as well. You just have to click and hold on that particular word that you don’t really understand, and voilla! It will pop up and tell you what are the meaning of that word.
